« link dump | Main | ouch. »

it's all his fault.

So Jason's gone and redesigned Kottke.org, integrating all his content into one column, with all sorts of tricks to have movie reviews, book reviews, "classic" posts, remaindered links, etc., appear in-line but with mini-templates of their own. All of which is great, of course...I mean who doesn't love the big K?

Then why do I have this nagging feeling that someday we will all return to the talismanic ur-format of freedonia.com/~carl, where everything's on one page, all scrollable, searchable (CTRL+F, anyone?) and even permalinked for user-friendliness. Categories? Context-providing Google links? Comments? Revenue producing reading lists? Micro-ads? Daily, weekly and monthly archives? Feh. It's all about the output.

Remember, kids: this is all his fault. All of it. I blame Carl, and you should too.

I wish more people remembered that it really is all Carl's fault.

And that Jason Kottke isn't an innovator.

I blame Gans

where *is* carl these days? the last time i saw him he was saying something about moving to vancouver. but i don't think that happened.

i usually blame carl for everything in general, to save time.

I remember some wag wrote years ago that Adam Clayton was the luckiest man in the history of rock and roll. I think the same applies to Kottke. But his redesign is nice. Whatever. Also years ago I wanted to start walking around wearing a 'Hello, My Name is Carl' sticker. I was going to debut it at the first Eggers-mania reading here on the right coast. The line was too long and I went home despondent at the inevitable effects of minor celebrity. Somehow Carl managed not to soil it all. I still blame Carl. And I still want to walk around wearing that sticker.

If I'm Adam Clayton, who's Bono? Or isn't the comparison that specific?

I figured it was just one of those strange American things. Thanks for reassuring me that you're not _all_ so crazy, Anil ;-)
